Some careers settle into a single lane early and stay there. Dr. Sunil Thaman's has done the opposite, moving through manufacturing, quality auditing, training and consulting over more than three decades, anchored by one idea that has stayed constant throughout: a system only works if the people inside it understand it, believe in it, and keep improving it.

From the factory floor to the audit room

Today, Dr. Thaman holds the title of Chief Learning and Development Officer at SANTULIT. He is an internationally accredited Management Systems Lead Auditor and an IRCA-approved Lead Trainer across quality management, environmental management, information security and occupational health and safety — credentials that sit alongside life membership of the Quality Council of India and membership of the American Society for Quality in the United States. That list of accreditations, though, is only half the story. The other half was built years earlier, on a factory floor.

Mercury-wetted switches, floppy disks, and a plant from West Germany

Dr. Thaman began his career as a Senior Technical Executive at Delta Hamlin Limited, a fully export-oriented unit manufacturing mercury-wetted switches and relays used in radar applications. From there, he moved to MIT-India, where he handled a specialised glass-bonding process used in producing magnetic recording heads for floppy disk drives.

One assignment in particular stands out: bringing a floppy disk manufacturing plant from West Germany to Rajasthan on a turnkey basis. The project went on to ship one million floppy disks to Electronorgtechnika in the erstwhile USSR through ET&T. He was later involved in a separate technology transfer as well, bringing TEAC Corporation of Japan's know-how to Hyderabad for manufacturing 3.5-inch micro-floppy disks.

Eighteen years in, a shift toward management systems

By the time Dr. Thaman had spent close to eighteen years in industrial quality and manufacturing, he had seen first-hand how technology, people and process have to move together for a manufacturing system to actually work — not just on paper. That experience became the foundation for the next phase of his career: management systems auditing. His industrial background gave him something auditors without factory experience often lack — the ability to read an organisation through the realities of its operations, not only through checklists and standards.

The auditing work has since taken him across 28 countries and through more than 8,000 organisations, from small enterprises to large multinationals.

Tamkeen, Bahrain: a TQMS project finished ahead of schedule

Dr. Thaman's work has also extended into consulting and large-scale quality implementation. Through 2017 and 2018, he served as project manager for the establishment and implementation of a Total Quality Management System at Tamkeen in the Kingdom of Bahrain — an organisation of more than 1,100 employees spread across 12 departments. The quality management system was completed ahead of schedule, and Tamkeen went on to achieve ISO 9001 certification with zero non-conformities.

For Dr. Thaman, that assignment was never only about the certificate. It was about getting people across the organisation to rethink customer focus, customer satisfaction, and the place quality holds in everyday work.

Staying current: AI management systems and continuous learning

Standards change, and Dr. Thaman has kept pace with them through training programmes, webinars and professional forums rather than treating his accreditations as a one-time achievement. He is now also a certified Lead Auditor for Artificial Intelligence Management Systems under ISO 42001 — a sign that his interest in how systems are governed has kept moving with the technology organisations are adopting.

That same instinct for staying current shows up outside the ISO world too. He is a certified ZED Assessor under the Ministry of Micro, Small & Medium Enterprises, Government of India's Zero Defect Zero Effect (ZED) Certification Scheme — a credential aimed at helping India's MSME sector build quality and sustainability into how it manufactures, not just into how it reports.

What stands out most across Dr. Sunil Thaman's career is its range. Industrial technology and manufacturing, auditing, training, consulting, large-scale quality implementation — each phase has added another layer to how he reads an organisation, rather than replacing the one before it. The throughline, as he describes it, is a belief that quality isn't a standard an organisation reaches once and files away. It is a way of thinking, measuring and improving that has to keep running underneath everything else.
