Business as a vehicle for opportunity
For Premasis Bhattacharjee, business has always carried a responsibility beyond financial performance. His belief is straightforward: a successful enterprise should create employment, strengthen families and give people room to grow. That thinking has shaped the development of SAP Group, which today brings together organisations working across education, advisory services, business management, interiors, travel, events, infrastructure, finance and digital services.
His leadership style places particular importance on preparation. Rather than treating uncertainty as an exception, he believes organisations should be ready for it. One principle he has consistently emphasised is that every business should have an exigency plan, well supported by a clear vision. Growth, in his view, requires ambition, but it also requires discipline, adaptability and the ability to respond when circumstances change.
Giving back to community
His work outside business has been equally important to him. In 2010, he founded the Krishnanagar Natun Kalipur Cultural & Welfare Society and continues to serve as its President. Through the organisation, he has supported community development, cultural activities and welfare initiatives. His involvement became particularly visible during the COVID-19 pandemic, when he extended support to people and communities facing difficult circumstances.
He also served as President of the Rotary Club of Sonarpur during 2021–2022, adding another structured platform to his community work. Over the years, his contributions to business and society have been recognised through honours including Rashtriya Atal Puraskar, International Atal Award, Bengal Business Samman and International Business Icon Award.
What connects these different parts of his life is his understanding of leadership. He does not see entrepreneurship and social responsibility as separate pursuits. They are, for him, expressions of the same conviction: that a person who builds something should also contribute to the world around them.
